Ang's Ba Chang Day
Monday, September 01, 2008
It is Labor day here in States and so we are having yet another nice long weekend. Yesterday I was looking through the kitchen cabinets and decided to make ba changs! I've got some bamboo leaves from Big Jess before she left and I've been procrastinating to make them! Well since it wasn't "Duan Wu Jie" I declare yesterday, the Ang's Ba Chang Day haha...
And so the entire afternoon while Jason was playing on his PS3, I was busy preparing all the ingredients needed to bao the ba chang! There were so much ingredients to prepare!!! But kinda fun when you do it slowly. Haha...
And so after dinner at the Thai restaurant, I enrolled Jason to help me wrap the rice dumplings! Hehe... It was very tiring yet fun and since it was our first time, we had a lot of difficulties wrapping them! In the end, Jason got frustrated haha but we still manage to get the job done! Here are the pictures.
Darling FIRST Ba Chang!
My FIRST Ba Chang!
Look here dear! Hmmm goofy face hehe.
Our completed Ba Changs!
Satisfied couple! Hehe...
We manage to wrap about 20 dumplings but only 10 of them survived the entire boiling point journey haha. Either we wrapped them up to loosely or wrongly. We had a few this morning and they were pretty yummy but since it was the first time I tried using Fong Luts (dried water chestnuts) I didn't really know how to prepare them, end up the Fong Luts are still pretty hard... :)
The Ba Changs that survived the ordeal... Not too bad looking ya? Haha. But I think our Ba Changs are way too tiny haha... We need to wrap bigger Ba Changs the next round!
Summary 1) Darling don't like Fong Luts but I do, so the next time shall wrap half of them with Fong Luts and the other half without. We will use different colored raffia strings to mark them.
2) Darling don't like the black eye peas in the rice. Neither do I, so shall substitute them with dried hei bis instead.
3) Shall find out how to use salted egg yolks so the next time we can put them in the ba changs. They tastes lovely!
4) Darling love nonya chang instead of the salty ba changs. I like the black ba changs!
